The 339-mile CHPE transmission line aims to provide hydropower to a million New York City homes. According to EPA data, carbon emissions in the New York City area rose by about 20% between 2019 and 2022. Gas-fired power plants contribute to poor air quality, which can lead to health problems like asthma. The asthma rate for children in New York City, especially in poorer neighborhoods, is one of the highest in the country. New York has six years to achieve its goal of powering 70 percent of its grid with renewable energy.

Officials told NBC News in February that Biden is thinking about implementing harsher asylum standards without Congress. Mayorkas' comments adhere to the White House's current playbook on the border crisis: Publicly condemn Capitol Hill's deadlock on border policy while privately, the president weighs executive border actions. Both Biden and Trump visited southern border towns on Thursday, each attempting to play offense on the issue. That sent border policy reform back to the drawing board after already months-long negotiations. As border legislation remains at a stalemate in Congress, the Biden team is looking for a border victory without Capitol Hill's help.

“Make no mistake: Putin is responsible for Navalny’s death. A few moments earlier, Secretary of State Antony Blinken linked Navalny’s death directly to Russia’s president. Asked whether Navalny’s death might spur Congress to act in providing more Ukraine aid, Biden was hopeful. Even so, Johnson said in a statement Friday that Putin “is likely directly responsible” for Navalny’s death. “I made it clear to him that I believe the consequences of that would be devastating for Russia,” Biden said in Geneva, where the summit was held.

US President Donald Trump and China's President Xi Jinping attend a business leaders event inside the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on November 9, 2017. The Washington Post first reported the Trump campaign was weighing a theoretical 60% Chinese tariff plan. Her disapproval echoes the concerns of Wall Street investors who worry that another China trade war would disrupt markets again. At the time, Deutsche Bank estimated that the trade war was causing the stock market to hemorrhage trillions. Trump has attacked Biden for appeasing China while simultaneously expressing cozy sentiments toward China's authoritarian president, Xi Jinping.

For months, battered by President Biden’s dismal 2024 re-election polls, Democrats have been undergoing a kind of collective nervous breakdown over Mr. Biden’s re-election prospects against Donald Trump. Following Mr. Trump’s victory in New Hampshire and with the unofficial start of the general election campaign, there is no reason for the Biden team to panic. Polls at this stage of the race are almost always a referendum on the incumbent instead of a clear choice. Still, the president’s bad polls and a stubbornly low approval rating are, or should be, more than just grist for Mr. Biden’s critics. Joe Biden has yet to explain clearly why he’s running for a second term.

What We Learned From Bogotá’s Buses
  + stars: | 2024-01-11 | by ( Michael Kimmelman | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
The system, a rapid bus network called TransMilenio, rolled out in 2000. Its buses weren’t as big or as fast as trains, but they were up and running in a fraction of the time and at a vastly lower cost. The idea of rapid buses became the rage from Jakarta to Mexico City, and Enrique Peñalosa, the Bogotá mayor who cooked up the idea for TransMilenio, became a globe-trotting celebrity after his term ended. But there was another colorful character whose contributions to TransMilenio I had to leave on the cutting room floor. (He explained the dropping of his pants by citing the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of “symbolic violence.”)

“History,” the essayist Thomas Carlyle wrote in 1840, “is the biography of great men” — and of these Napoleon, whom Carlyle described as “our chief contemporary wonder,” was considered by many to be the greatest. The ambitious dreamed of emulating him; inmates of lunatic asylums believed they were him. And now we find him, some 200 years later, larger than life once again, on IMAX screens and in multiplexes in Ridley Scott’s new epic “Napoleon.”So why does Mr. Scott’s choice of subject feel like something of a throwback? What has changed is not Napoleon’s story, but our sense of the possibilities it once represented. People (with the possible exception of Mr. Putin) are unlikely to see themselves as history’s protagonists.

His stance on fossil fuels put him at odds with his party and he was frequently blamed for single-handedly quashing some of the Biden administration's most ambitious climate policy goals. Even as West Virginia overwhelmingly voted for former President Donald Trump in the 2016 and 2020 elections, Manchin easily won reelection in 2018. With Manchin gone, his successor will almost certainly be a Republican — most likely West Virginia Gov. Thanks to his GOP credentials and embrace of Trump, he's even less likely to be a climate ally than Manchin. Democrats, whose Senate majority is already slim, could lose that Senate seat for the foreseeable future — making any climate bills that much harder to pass.

But the trial quickly became a test of wills between Trump and Engoron over who controlled the court. GM earnings give its restive workers an inch

On Tuesday, GM reported strong earnings that will embolden staff who have walked out at all three of the big Detroit firms. GM beat analysts’ expectations for third-quarter profit despite a $200 million hit from the strikes that started in September. That said, the firm run by Mary Barra also ditched its official forecast as it wrestles with the $200 million weekly costs from labor disruptions. Fortunately for GM, talks with its union seem to have narrowed in from earlier demands that would have vaporized the industry’s operating profit. Ongoing strikes by the United Auto Workers union, which represents GM employees, cost the company $200 million in the third quarter.

That's in addition to about 242,700 Venezuelans who already qualified for temporary status before Wednesday's announcement. Venezuelans who arrive in the U.S. after July 31 of this year will not be eligible for the protection. The city is currently paying to house about 60,000 newly arrived migrants. But Adams on Wednesday praised the decision to grant protections to Venezuelans and thanked the administration for listening to the city's concerns. The administration also said Wednesday it was also using Defense Department forces to support Homeland Security staff on the border.

CNN —Presidential history is lousy with ne’er-do-well sons. American history tells us a different story: Bad presidential sons are as old as the nation itself, yet political opponents have never thought weaponizing them would win an election. If there is evidence that a sitting president, a former president, a presidential candidate, a presidential heir or anyone else, has committed a crime, he or she should be held accountable. “I never did in my Life know a Youth so exceedingly indolent, or so surprisingly voluptuous,” Jack’s tutor, Reverend Jonathan Boucher, wrote to George Washington. Devoted students of history would object to wasting precious time and resources on a nothingburger scandal about a president’s unelected son.

Trump had to agree, for example, to make no threats on social media against co-defendants, witnesses and the 30 unindicted co-conspirators. The former president has excoriated special counsel Jack Smith, who indicted him twice, on social media and in speeches. Elliot Williams, a former federal prosecutor and CNN legal analyst, said that the terms were fair and did not infringe on Trump’s rights. Trump’s many late-night social media eruptions will make it hard for observers to believe that he will stick to the conditions to which he’s agreed. By Monday evening, Trump had already posted on his social media network about the bond.

Leland also takes on questions about being blind that many of us might never ask, or might not know whom to ask. Do blind guys want to know if the woman they’re speaking to is pretty? He made the decision after a blind woman told him that he should learn now, rather than when his sight was gone for good, an experience that for many can be an emotional tornado. The writing process, he said, kept him going despite his declining vision and accompanying worries about the future. But given the fact that he was writing about blindness, “losing vision almost felt productive.

Ron DeSantis quietly signed legislation Thursday that would ban most abortions after six weeks in Florida, a move that will weigh on his likely 2024 presidential bid. The Florida law bans abortions at six weeks but creates new exemptions for rape and incest up to 15 weeks of pregnancy. Last year, DeSantis signed a 15-week abortion ban passed by the GOP-controlled Legislature that is currently before the Florida Supreme Court. He supports a federal abortion ban. Ambassador Nikki Haley, who announced her candidacy in February, said on NBC's "TODAY" show that she would not support a "full-out federal ban" but would support a federal 15-week abortion ban.
The Keys are also the first flock of canaries in the coal mine of climate change. The hurricane made undeniable what previous floods had only suggested: that climate change will someday make life in the archipelago impossible to sustain. The decision to leave, on the other hand, which once signified surrender, now looks more like acceptance of the inevitable. It's this messiness that is reflected in the word "displacement": the migratory shifts caused by climate change are as chaotic as the weather events that cause them. This is an excerpt adapted from THE GREAT DISPLACEMENT: Climate Change and the Next American Migration by Jake Bittle.
Here are some key moments in the months ahead:FEB. 1The Treasury Department will release a quarterly document next week laying out how it plans to fund the government over the next three months. The document, which includes information on debt the Treasury will issue, could shed light on the timing of a possible default. Data regarding government income could be an important factor in determining the so-called "X date," or the day when the government will stop paying its bills. Normally, these funds would be reinvested, but the Treasury Department has said it could use the proceeds to help make needed payments. JULY-OCTOBERMost analysts see the true X date occurring somewhere between July and October.
Joe Biden beat Donald Trump once, and Democrats are crafting a strategy to try to beat him again in 2024 — even if his name isn’t on the ballot. But Democrats interviewed about the emerging 2024 strategy said they plan to make sure this particular comment isn’t soon forgotten. (Trump issued another statement on his Truth Social platform insisting he hadn’t said he wanted to “terminate” the Constitution.) A Trump ally, former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich, said he doesn’t believe Trump will suffer a backlash over his comment about the Constitution. Trump’s comment “is very serious,” said longtime Biden confidant Ted Kaufman, a former U.S. senator from Delaware.
Carl Icahn had a textbook strategy for the Nevada-based energy utility Southwest Gas Holdings. In August, Southwest Gas' board decided against a divestiture, and the sale of subsidiaries that Icahn had urged remains uncertain. "Shareholders don't want to hear it, but you really have great difficulty selling a company at a good price today," the widely followed activist investor Icahn told Insider. via CNBCBut, like Icahn in the case of Southwest Gas, participants in this new onslaught may find themselves confounded by an increasingly complex and fraught business environment. According to Lazard, 37% of activist campaigns this year were launched by first-timers, the highest proportion since the company started tracking these figures in 2015.

REUTERS/Tingshu Wang/File PhotoBEIJING, Oct 21 (Reuters) - Xi Jinping, poised to clinch a third five-year term as China's leader, will on Sunday preside over the most dramatic moment of the Communist Party's twice-a-decade congress and reveal the members of its elite Politburo Standing Committee. Xi's break with precedent to rule beyond a decade was set in motion when he abandoned presidential term limits in 2018. His norm-busting as China's most powerful ruler since Mao Zedong has made it even harder to predict who will join him on the standing committee. At least two of the seven current Standing Committee members are expected to retire due to age norms. Reports this week in the Wall Street Journal and South China Morning Post suggest there could be as many as four openings, with Premier Li, 67, possibly among those stepping down.
